About Patna High Court District Judge (Entry Level) Recruitment
The High Court of Judicature at Patna conducts the District Judge (Entry Level) recruitment to fill judicial vacancies in the subordinate courts of Bihar. This is a direct recruitment process open exclusively to practising advocates with a minimum of 7 years of continuous practice. Unlike other government job recruitments, this is not open to fresh law graduates. The appointment is made under the Bihar Superior Judicial Service Rules and is one of the most prestigious judicial appointments in the state.
District Judges in Bihar exercise original and appellate jurisdiction over cases in their district. They are responsible for conducting trials, hearing appeals from lower courts, and managing the administration of subordinate courts in their jurisdiction.
Key Points Every Applicant Should Know
- Experience verification: At the time of document verification, candidates must produce certificates from the Bar Council and the concerned courts confirming their practice record. A minimum of 24 cases per year in the last 3 years is mandatory.
- Age relaxation: There is no age relaxation beyond the prescribed limit of 35 to 50 years. Candidates outside this range are not eligible regardless of their experience.
- Application portal: All applications must be submitted online through the Patna High Court official website at patnahighcourt.gov.in. Offline applications are not accepted.
- Fee refund: The application fee once paid is non-refundable under any circumstances, including disqualification at any stage.
Preparation Strategy for Patna High Court District Judge Exam
The Preliminary Examination is an objective-type test of 100 questions covering law subjects. The Main Examination is descriptive and covers subjects including Civil Law, Criminal Law, Constitutional Law, Code of Civil Procedure, Indian Penal Code, Evidence Act, and other relevant statutes. Candidates should focus on the following preparation approach:
- Revise core statutes thoroughly, particularly CPC, IPC, CrPC, Indian Evidence Act, and the Constitution of India.
- Practise previous year question papers from similar state judicial service exams such as UP PCS J, Delhi Judicial Services, and Rajasthan Judicial Services for reference.
- Pay special attention to landmark Supreme Court judgements and recent amendments to key legislation.
- For the Interview stage, be prepared to discuss your legal practice experience, notable cases you have handled, and your understanding of judicial administration.
Career Growth After Selection
After selection as a District Judge (Entry Level), officers can progress through the Bihar Superior Judicial Service through promotions based on seniority and merit. The career path includes positions such as Additional District and Sessions Judge, District and Sessions Judge, and eventually High Court Judgeship through elevation. The starting salary of Rs.51,550 per month with allowances grows significantly with promotions, and the position carries substantial administrative authority and social prestige.
