S. Janaki: Legendary Playback Singer’s Demise and Her Padma Bhushan Refusal
Legendary playback singer S. Janaki has passed away at the age of 88. She was known as the “Nightingale of South India” and sang more than 48,000 songs across multiple languages over a career spanning nearly 70 years. An interesting fact is that she refused to accept the Padma Bhushan award offered to her in 2013, believing that artists should be honoured during their lifetime rather than years later. This was her personal stand on the timing of recognition, not a rejection of honours in general. This fact could appear as a tricky question in exams, so remember the “which award did she refuse” angle carefully.
