“Cheeta Andolan” — Protest Against the Ken-Betwa Link Project

The “Cheeta Andolan” was a protest by Gond and Kol tribal communities in Chhatarpur and Panna districts of Madhya Pradesh against the Ken-Betwa River Linking Project’s Dhodhan Dam. Chhattisgarh Becomes First State to Adopt a Risk-Based Business Approval System

The Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly passed the Chhattisgarh Ease of Doing Business Act, 2026, making it the first state to introduce a risk-based regulatory framework for businesses. Low-risk businesses get faster approvals and self-certification, while high-risk businesses (like chemical factories) still face full scrutiny. In the first phase, 43 services across eight departments are covered, benefiting roughly 15 lakh MSME (Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises) entrepreneurs.

Static GK: “Deemed approval” under this Act means that if the government doesn’t respond within a set time limit, the approval is automatically considered granted — remember this term for policy-based questions.

The Supreme Court has approved the Kukrail Night Safari and Day Zoo project in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh — set to become India’s first urban night safari and the world’s fifth such facility. The aim is to boost tourism, wildlife conservation and nature-based research, with enclosures planned for Asiatic lions, Bengal tigers and leopards.

India’s Global Ranking in Cotton Cultivation and the New Cotton Productivity Mission

India ranks first in the world by area under cotton cultivation (around 37% of global area) but ranks second after China in total production, and much lower in productivity per hectare. India contributes about 19% of global cotton fibre output, though its share of global cotton exports is only 3–4%, since domestic mills consume most of what’s grown. To fix this, the Union Cabinet approved the “Mission for Cotton Productivity” in May 2026 with an outlay of ₹5,659.22 crore, aiming to raise cotton productivity closer to the global average through better seeds and farming techniques.

Static GK: Cotton is nicknamed “White Gold” in India due to its economic importance to the textile sector, the country’s second-largest employer after agriculture.

Bab-el-Mandeb Strait in the News Amid Houthi Threats

The Bab-el-Mandeb Strait, connecting the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden (and onward to the Indian Ocean via the Suez Canal), has been in the news after Yemen’s Houthi rebels threatened to attack ships, especially oil tankers, heading to Saudi Arabia. This follows worsening ties between Iran (which backs the Houthis) and Saudi Arabia, linked to the wider US (United States)-Iran conflict. It remains one of the world’s busiest shipping chokepoints.

Static GK: “Bab-el-Mandeb” is Arabic for “Gate of Tears”; don’t confuse it with the Strait of Hormuz, which connects the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman — a different chokepoint entirely.
